Today’s Mobile Phones Our Portable Windows To The World
You bought it in case of emergencies, and to stay in touch with family and friends. So you’re probably surprised to find yourself using your mobile phone in ways you had never imagined.
You check your email, you text your friends, your phone reminds you of appointments, you might even use it’s modern GPS technology to figure out the fastest route to get to those appointments– And it’s been so easy to figure it all out!
Seems like everyday you discover new ways your mobile phone keeps you connected to the important people in your life, and keeps you in the information flow. But just how much are these little portable devices capable of?
Snap and Share
Nobody expected this to happen. First, consumers embraced digital photography with eager enthusiasm, and bought up digital cameras like they were candy. But even more surprising, now most digital pictures are taken with mobile phones.
The resolution may be less– They average about 1.3-megapixels. But you can instantly send them from your phone, through email or instant message to friends family, even clients. And many service providers provide subscribers with personal Web space photo albums, along with the software that enables you to post your pictures on them. Or, like any digital camera, you can upload photos to your computer, using the phone manufacturer’s photo software, and a basic USB cord or wireless Bluetooth connection.
Beyond Phone Calls
Those digital photos you snap are a great way for you and the people you care about to be a part of each other’s day-to-day lives. Similarly, text messaging (SMS) provides instant connection when your hectic schedule only allows time for a quick “Hi.”
Most service providers also offer add-ons to their basic subscription packages that allow users to instantly check and compose email, and do some basic Internet browsing. You can even set your phone to alert you when a new message arrives in your inbox.
Fun!
For over a decade, we’ve expressed our personalities through the ringtones we pick. Today’s phones take this expression to a new level, with downloaded sound effects and samples from our favorite artists.
The major mobile service providers, even most of the phone manufacturers, offer large catalogs of song clips from every genre, excerpts from popular TV shows and movies, and quotes from beloved cartoon characters.
But that’s just where the fun begins. You’ll also find screen “wallpapers,” sports update subscriptions, and downloadable games, ranging from classic arcade-style, favorite casino games, and familiar titles, like Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and Madden NFL. These, too, are available from your service provider, easily searched from your onboard menus, and the extra fees are surprisingly low.
For music fans ringtones are likely not enough. Mobile phones with built-in MP3 players have hit the market, capable of playing both paid and subscription music files. And, just like stand-alone players, they offer multiple EQ preset options, and sophisticated Bluetooth technology, allowing fast music file downloading and wireless headphone connections.
Portable Office
Busy professionals and students may forget to carry their PDAs, and often don’t want to lug around an expensive laptop. But they never leave home without their phones.
Following the lead set by BlackBerry, HP iPaq, and Palm Treo, all the major phone manufacturers have introduced model lines that integrate PDA functions with mobile calling functions and Internet connection capabilities.
It’s called Smartphone technology, but think of it as a portable connection to your office. Smartphones offer the standard PDA features; Calendar, calculator, reminder alarms, voice recorder, and word processing software. Most also offer miniature QWERTY keyboard layouts– The standard placement of keys that you find on computer keyboards or typewriters.
That means Smartphones are less streamlined, so they may not be the right choice for those who are unlikely to use these features. But many professionals have already embraced the convenience of integrating all these functions into a single unit.
With each generation of mobile phone technology, manufacturers have tailored their phones to meet our individual needs and lifestyles. And, despite their ever-increasing capabilities and complexity, the industry has focused on keeping them user-friendly. It’s easy to see why our mobile phones have not only become our favorite high-tech tool, but are constant companions as well.

How to Choose a Mobile Phone
The first mobile phones, released in the market during the early nineties, were large and clunky devices with low battery life and very limited memory. All this has changed. Today’s mobile phones are not only light and compact, but are packed with features. Many of them have camera, MP3 and PDA functions, with the option to download games, programs, ringtones and full-color wallpapers. You can’t even call them “just” mobile phonesthey’re almost like mobile offices.
With the diversity of features, the variety of shapes and sizes, and the thick competition between mobile phone manufacturers that lead them to release new models every year, it’s hard to pick which mobile phone to buy.
Today’s top of the line phones can do almost everything, but which of those features will you really use? Some have camera resolution rivals a decent point and click digital camera; others flip open to reveal a keyboard to let you check and write emails and even surf the web. While it’s always great to have that kind of power in your pocket (literally), the first and most important thing to consider if your lifestyle.
Are you an executive? Do you have to keep track of a lot of meetings and tasks? Do you spend a lot of time away from the office? If so, buying a phone with PDA features will really simplify your life. You don’t have to carry too many gadgets with you, and you can make note of the messages you receive directly on to the phone’s calendar, and set a reminder for meetings and deadlines.
On the other hand, a stay at home mom may not need a PDA function, but would probably benefit from a mobile phone with a good camera. You can take instant pictures of your kids (and we all know how those moments pass while you run upstairs to get a camera) and proudly send them to friends and family in the same minute.
Most teenagers opt for phones that have the radio and MP3 functions, or have that elusive quality called “form and coolness factor”. A mobile phone is not just functional, it is also almost an accessory. Certain models are designed to look sleek and beautiful, and are even declared by fashion magazines to be the “it” model of the year. Others simply are triumphs in ergonomic design, and use materials (from a chic chrome to trendy brights) to communicate a particular image. A few models even allow full customability with changeable cases in a wide variety of colors. You can actually buy all of the shades, and make your mobile phone match your outfit!
Aside from your lifestyle, of course another important consideration is price. You will have to set a budget, and then look for the best deals. Check various stores and websites before buying, but remember that cheapest is not always best. Ask if the mobile phone comes with a warranty, how long it lasts, and whether the warranty involves repair or replacement of the unit. Also remember that it is better to pay a little higher for a phone you like and will use for a long time, than to opt for a cheaper phone, and then replace it within months.

How Important is Mobile SMS
There is a nice television commercial that is being shown currently on the Indian TV channels. The Nokia advertisement seeks to dispel the commonly held notion that phones are used just for talking. A number of applications are shown, including video recording, still photos, MP3 music, FM radio and of course text messages. Though text messaging is a big improvement on the pager (remember it?), today it feels impossible to live without it.
For the younger generation, life is unimaginable without a mobile phone. For them it is like an extension of their hands, a handy tool to say so many things. The young people have devised a peculiar lingo of missed calls and text messages by the dozen. Text messages are an improved version of the old pass-the-note messaging, especially in the classroom as SMS messages scurry to and fro. Text messages are ideal to send to people because they are stored in their handsets to be read when they are free. Sometimes a call might catch the receiver at an awkward moment and he may prefer to ignore it at the time. Text messaging is possible on every mobile phone and some landline phones also.
Text messaging has proved to be a profitable revenue earner for the telecom companies thanks to the TV channels. Almost every program advertises a short code (three, four or five figure number) for viewers to send text messages with their opinions. Marketing companies have used text so extensively that the courts stepped in to restrict the usage.
Sending text messages is also very convenient because this medium is very suitable for sending payment reminders, payment intimations, disaster alerts, SOS calls, greetings and courtesy calls can be transmitted in this form. Receipts of payments like utility bills, club fees, subscriptions, renewals and so on can be sent by way of SMS messages.
Text messages have proved their worth during the last few years as the ownership of mobile phones exploded to 60 million sets. During times of crisis, governments have rushed SMS alerts to citizens warning of floods, earthquakes, etc. Thanks to its ease of use, more people are taking up text messaging. The mobile phone is now seen more as an accessory of modern life than as a novelty item. There are now more than 120 million phones in India, of which landlines constitute less than half the number.
